Mississippi Valley Sportsmens Club
Chuck Hoy, left, Kerry Darling and Jerry Hanley helped out at the game dinner in New Albin last Sunday.Members of the Mississippi Valley Sportsmens Club put on a wild game potluck supper for their families and guests Sunday evening (29 Jan. 1979) at the V.F.W. Hall in New Albin. Game was abundant. Because dishes were not labeled, it was hard to tell just exactly you were sampling. It might have been turtle, squirrel, rabbit, venison, pheasant or even beaver. The crowd exceeded the expectations of the club, so halfway through the evening you could see people standing in all corners of the building gulping down the delicious offerings. There was a true atmosphere of friendship in the hall, as cards were played, tales were told, and some sportsmen discussed the recent rash of stamps made mandatory by the Conservation Commission for hunters, fishermen and trappers. The club is Lansing-based, but has members from New Albin, De Soto and other towns as well. There were many door prizes handed out. Several dozen six packs and a lot of small fishing tackle were won by those in attendance. Pete Jangula won a box of steel shotshells. Bob Oden won a pair of socks, Cindy Mitchell won a fishing reel, and Mrs. Milt Wild won two chicken specials at the Riv Aire. Plaques were awarded to winners of the clubs fishing and hunting contests. Dennis Christoffer won for walleye, an eight pound, 12 ounce fish; Lloyd Welsh had the biggest bullhead, one pound, eleven and one half ounces; Gene Gray had the best bass, one pound, 13 ounces; he also claimed the plaque for the biggest bluegill, 11 and 3/4 ounces; Gray also had the biggest striper, one pound and 10 ounces. Chris McKee won for the biggest perch, 14 ounces; and Ed Gage, Jr. had the biggest northern, a six pound fish. In the junior division, Eric McKee won for the best walleye, 13 ounces; Jamie Welsh for the best trout, a 12 ounce fish; Ronnie Hanson for the best perch, an eight ounce specimen; and Eric McKee for the best bluegill, which weighed five ounces. Club president Ken Hanson got the plaque for the biggest drake mallard, two pounds, 15 ounces. Barney Diersen and Bob Oden were awarded plaques for best deer. Oden got his with a bow. Diersen got his with a shotgun. Mark Blackmans pheasant with a tail feather 22 inches long won in that category. The gathering was clearly a way to get rid of the mid-winter blues, at least until the next blizzard.
