Lansing news continues .....
Donald Hammel Jr. was taken by Lions ambulance to
the La Crosse Lutheran Hospital on Sunday after a motorcycle he
was operating went out of control on Mt. Hosmer at about 7:45
p.m. He received a broken leg and lacerations. The cycle, which
belonged to Ron Strong, was slightly damaged in the mishap.
-Another accident over the past weekend involved Jim Schobert,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank "Bud" Schobert. Jim lost
control of an old Chevy pickup on a county road near Interstate
Power Co. south of Lansing. Jim escaped without serious injury,
although the pickup was demolished.
-The Gene Sweeney family of Decatur, Illinois spent the Fourth of
July weekend as guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sweeney.
-Mrs. Bob (Mary) Kious and daughter Karen drove to Moline, Ill.
Sunday, and from there they and the former's sister, Mrs. Jean
Isaacson, planned to fly to Seattle, Wash. for a visit of about
two weeks with another sister.
-There wasn't a whole lot of solitude for anyone who sought it on
the Mississippi over the Fourth of July. The channel was choked
with boats, the sandbars were swarming with humanity, and the
Hummingbird Slough was really humming.
-Frank Sandry of Waukon was an office caller here on Saturday.
Frank, who is 83 years old, is in good shape for a man his age.
-On the evening of June 26, a bridal shower was held for Marcia
Manning at the Wexford Hall. Many neighbors, relatives and
friends attended. Marcia received many nice and useful gifts. She
will become the bride of Mark Kruse on August 14 at the
Immaculate Conception Church in Wexford.
-Dave Halverson of Lansing and Ray Mitchell of New Albin left
June 13 for Army Reserve training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. Dave
writes that it is no vacationland.
-The Frank Pfiffner family visited several days at the home of
his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pfiffner. Abbie and son Dave drove
to Rockford, Illinois on Thursday and brought them to Lansing.
Frank is an attorney in Anchorage, Alaska.
-John "Butler" Protsman spent the weekend with his
family in Lansing. He is employed by the La Crosse Dredge Co. and
is working on the Illinois River near Ottawa.
-Weekend visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milt Wilde were
their daughters, Lyn Wilde of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Doug Bulman
and husband of Iowa City.
-Weekend visitors at the home of Mrs. Hazel Olson were Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Kelleher and Travis, Gary Ehlers, Ruth Olson, Maggie and
Suzie McGill, Bob Kulwey, Jim Peters, Keith Vanderhall, Cindy and
Mitch Kruse, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Connor and Pat, Marcia and Byron
Garin, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Schneden and Travis.
-Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kerndt returned to their Lansing home Tuesday
after spending a couple of days visiting atthe Luana home of Mr.
and Mrs. Lyle Pape.
-Mr. and Mrs. Dave Banis and children, Vicki, Stevi, Cori, and
T.J. were home for the holiday visiting parents and other
relatives in Waukon and Lansing.
-Mrs. Mattie Magnusson received word on Sunday of the death of
Harriet Sluss that day. She was a former Lansing resident, having
made her home here with Alberta Magnusson.
-Herman Ronnfeldt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ronnfeldt of
Central City, is recovering from injuries he received when a
tractor he was operating tipped on him at the Robert Howe farm.
He received a broken pelvis, a broken leg, a broken collar bone
and second degree burns.
-A birthday party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robby Howe
for their son Danny, who celebrated his first birthday recently.
Present for the June 27 event were Danny's grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Ronnfeldt of Central City and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Howe
of Waukon; Mrs. Teresa Donahue and family of Waukon; the George
Howe family of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Garin and Cheryl of
Lansing.
Weekend guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Gruber were Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Gruber of Cedar Rapids and the Robert Mefferd
family of Marion. The Mefferds' daughter Robyn, is a guest for
the next two weeks at her grandparents' home.
-Mr. and Mrs. Dutch Protsman and David and Lisa returned to
Lansing recently after spending about three weeks in Colorado
Springs visiting with a brother of Dutch, Albert Protsman Jr.
NEW ALBIN NEWS
-Mr. and Mrs. David Hudachko of Glenview, Ill., and Mr. and Mrs.
James Sires and son Timmy of Onalaska, Wis. spent the Fourth of
July weekend at the Lillian Sires home.
-Nathan Imhoff celebrated his third birthday at the home of his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Moore on Sunday. Present at his
party were: Mr. and Mrs. Pat Welch and family, Mr. and Mrs. L.F.
Moore, Marlene Imhoff, Brian and Damian, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Moore and Remi. Nathan had a cake decorated like a baseball
diamond and received many nice presents. After supper all enjoyed
a fireworks display.
-A son was born on June 26 at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse
to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Johnson of La Crosse. The mother is the
former Barbara Mauss, and grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Connie
Mauss of New Albin.
-A daughter was born June 26 at the St. Francis Hospital in La
Crosse to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Smerud of New Albin. Paternal
grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. George Smerud.
-Mr. and Mrs. Earl Russell came from Dubuque on Friday the 18th
and accompanied their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs.
Edmund Carroll to Frederic, Wisc. where they visited with another
daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Anderson.
They also visited friends at Cable, Wisc., and Duluth and
Superior, Minn.
-Mr. and Mrs. Earl Russell spent the night at the Edmund Carroll
home on Sunday the 20th, leaving for Dubuque on Monday
morning. They took their granddaughter, Kris Carroll, with
them for a weeks visit.
-Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Carroll and Shane spent the weekend at La
Motte, Iowa visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Russell,
enjoying a family picnic on Sunday at Maquoketa. Iowa. Kris came
home with them after a visit with her grandparents.
-Mrs. Teresa Buege returned home on Saturday from Milwaukee,
Wis., where she visited her sister and her grandson, Mrs. Stacia
Holter and Mike Allioto, who returned Mrs. Buege to her home on
Saturday.
-Mrs. Thomas Darling returned home on Monday, June 28 from St.
Francis Hospital in La Crosse where she had been a patient for
medical treatment.
-Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Darling and family were Saturday visitors at
the home of Mrs. Darling's father and two sisters.
-The Kenneth Casey V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary enjoyed their annual
eyening out at the Four Seasons Supper Club near La Crescent.
Nineteen members were present.
-A picnic and cookout was held at the Evelyn Plagge home. The
guests there were Mrs. Jeanne Wurm and children and Fran Greeno,
La Crosse; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Plagge and Joe, Mrs. Vince Waters,
Francis Pettit and Mr. Kenneth Moore.
-Miss Susie Breeser and friend Dan spent the weekend at the home
of her mother, Mrs. Norma Breeser.
-Miss Deb Meyer of Rochester, Minn., visited at the parental
Gilman Meyer home.
-Guests at the Bertha Wohlers home for the weekend were Mr. and
Mrs. David Huppart and Harland of Milwaukee,Wis.; and Mr. and
Mrs. Larry Lutes and family of Peoria, Ill., along with Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Wohlers of Green Bay, Wis.
-Mr. and Mrs. Paul Breeser and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kottman and Jodi
were Sunday evening guests at the Robert Ellefson home.
-Mr. and Mrs. Paul Breeser attended the 4th of July Bicentennial
celebration in Eitzen.
-Mr. and Mrs. Dan Maust were weekend guests at the Robert Maust
Jr. home.
-Jug's Skelly girls softball team won over Frankie's team from
Caledonia with a score of 12-6.
-The New Albin men's softball team won over Houston by a score of
17-1.
-Mr. and Mrs. Leo Thimmesch of Topeka, Kansas recently spent a
weekend at the Nick Strub home. They came to get their three
children, Shane, Connie and Roger, who had spent three weeks with
their grandparents. Christie Ott returned home with them to spend
a couple of weeks at the Thimmesch home.
-Mr. and Mrs. Linus Ott spent the 4th of July weekend in Topeka,
Kansas at the Leo Thimmesch home, going especially to get their
daughter, Cristie. They returned home Monday.
-Mr. and Mrs. Nick Strub and Mrs. Sarah Wargin attended the
wedding of Gary Egan and Cindy Wachter at Cherry Mound on
Saturday, July 3.
-Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Hopkins and Debbie, Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Hopkins and family and Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hopkins and family, all
of Omaha, Neb., and Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Harvey and John of
Milwaukee, Wis., were weekend guests last weekend at the
William Freilinger and Owen Thorson homes. They came especially
for the ThorsonKlug wedding last Saturday.
HARPERS FERRY NEWS
-Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Lopez of Rosemount, Minn. became the proud
parents of a baby boy, born July 4th. He weighed 8 pounds 15
ounces and will be named Robert Edward. Mrs. Lopez is the former
Rose Ann Foley and grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leo Foley and
greatgrandparents are Mrs. Mae Foley and Mr. and Mrs. W. L.
Cota.
-Miss Jean Foley of Faith, S.D., spent the day Sunday with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Foley.
-Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Larson and daughter of Big Fork, Minn.
spent a few days visiting with her mother, Mrs. Lillian Martelle.
Mrs. Larson is the former Rita Martelle.
-Miss Anne Weymiller returned home Monday night after spending
ten days in Washington, D.C. and New York City and other points
of interest out east on a 4-H citizenship trip.
-Miss Renee Weymiller flew to Brewster, Washington, with her
grandparents from New Albin to attend a 50th wedding anniversary
of relatives, returning home on Thursday.
-Mr. Cletus Heffern of Mason City drove over Friday afternoon and
brought his mother, Mrs. Anna Heffern, back for a few days,
returning home on Tuesday.
-Miss Laura Luster of Cedar Rapids was at the home of her parents
over the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Harland Luster.
-Mr. and Mrs. Roger Valley, Tim and Matt, of La Crosse, Mr. and
Mrs. Ronnie Valley, Julie and Mike of Aurora, Ill., Mrs. Tom
Spinner of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Valley, Amy and Angie of
Decorah, Mrs. Bruce Strub and Jeremy of Lansing, and Nancy Valley
and Mary Jo Riley of Cedar Rapids were weekend guests at the Mrs.
Paula Valley home.
-Mr. and Mrs. Don Easley drove to Iowa City Saturday to bring
back their grandchildren, Darrell and Kerry Easley, and on
Tuesday they left for Reston, Virginia, where they will visit the
Don Easley, Jr., family.
-Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Luster and family of Cincinnati, Ohio, are
vacationing at the home of his mother, Mrs. Louella Luster, and
other relatives.
-Holiday weekend guests at the Maury Mooney home were Mr. and
Mrs. Carroll McTaggart of Independence, Ia., and Mr. and Tom
Mooney of Marion spent the weekend at the home of his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mooney.
-Mrs. Ruth Ann Cordova and Lisa of Waterloo spent the weekend
with her parents, M. and Mrs. Urb Hawes.
-Mr. and Mrs. Jim O'Neill became the proud parents of a baby
girl, born June 28th at Waukon Veterans Memorial hospital. Mr.
and Mrs. Steve O'Neill are the grandparents.
-Mrs. Hulda Martell received word this past week of the death of
her relative, Mrs. Kenneth Martell, of Morris, Minn.
-Mike Saddler returned home Saturday from St. Francis hospital in
La Crosse where he had been a patient for a few days.
-Mr. and Mrs. Stan Palmer of Dubuque spent the weekend visiting
relatives and friends in this area.
-Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schulte of Waterloo and Jack Schulte of Cedar
Rapids visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schulte.
-Mrs. Margaret Dunn and three children of Des Moines, la., along
with her brother, Terry Hall of Ft. Collins, Colo., visited
Monday at the Jack Boardman, Don Easley and Red Robinson homes.
Another brother, Larry Eall, of Colo. was recently killed in an
automobile accident in Missouri. They are nephews and a niece of
Mrs. Boardman, Mrs. Easley and Mrs. Robinson.
-Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bernadini of Omaha, Neb. are spending a few
days at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Schulte, and other
relatives.
-Karla and Kevin Duss of Bloomington, Minn., have been
vacationing at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Gavin.
-A family gathering was held Sunday, July 4th, at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Clarence Gavin, those present were Mr. and Mrs. Michael
Gavin and family of La Crosse, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Busch and
family and Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Duss of Blomington, Minn., Rita
Gavin of Cedar Rapids and Donald Gavin of Dubuque.
-Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown, John and Kenny, of San Antonio,
Texas, arrived Thursday to visit at the Mike Saddler home. Mr.
and Mrs. Jim Saddler and family of Anamosa were Sunday visitors
there also.
-Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Boardman, Scott and Renee of Rock Falls,
Wis., were weekend visitors at the Jerry Cota home.
WAUKON NEWS
-Mrs. Dorothy Ludeking recently spent a weekend with her daughter
and family, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Grass at Waterloo. She
accompanied them to Lake Delhi, where all spent a delightful
weekend. Enroute home on Monday, she stopped off for a day with
her son and family, Dr. A.B. Ludeking at Decorah.
-Mr. and Mrs. Roger Martin and daughter Sarah returned on
Wednesday after spending a week in Dallas, Texas visiting their
son David, who will graduate in August from a school of mortuary
science.
-Mrs. Marjorie Snitker Melaney of Rockford, Illinois spent
several days with her mother, Mrs. Iva Snitker on a recent
weekend, having come to attend her 40th year class reunion. She
was accompanied by Mrs. Laura Klemme Russell of Dubuque, who
visited relatives here during that time.
-Mrs. Iva Snitker and her houseguest Mary Boyd, the latter from
Waukesha, Wis., spent a couple of days last week visiting
relatives at Retreat, Wisc.
-The fourth annual family reunion picnic for Northgate residents
and their families will be held on Sunday, July 11, on the
grounds at the home. -The potluck dinner will be held at 11:30
and the area will be covered by a tent. Families are all invited.
Following the dinner, the Shriners Clowns, Young Americans, (a
high school singing group) from Monona will sing, and there will
be picnic games. The Off Beats of Waukon will play and sing in
the afternoon and there will be dancing.
-Carol Wiedenmann is now employed with G. Heileman Co. in La
Crosse, Wis. She was a May graduate of Western Wisconsin
Technical Institute of La Crosse.
-Scott Francik of Cedar Rapids was a week-end visitor at the home
of his fiancee, Carol Wiedenmann, over the long weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Pettingill recently spent 10 days on a quiet
vacation at Camp Kabetogama in northern Minnesota. They tried
fishing (which wasn't good) and got away from earshot of the
telephone for a while.
-Mr. and Mrs. Tom Counters and two children of Mason City spent
several days early this week at the parental Chuck Pettingill
home.
-Mr. and Mrs. Danny Iverson and two children of Aloaha, Ore.
arrived last week and are spending two weeks with his parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Arden Iverson.
-Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Palmer and two children of Newport News. Va.
arrived Saturday for a vacation visit with their parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Merton Palmer and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Meyer. They attended
Jerry's 10 year high school reunion Saturday night.
-Mrs. Harriet Letchford and Mrs. Grace Moe were overnight
visitors last Wednesday at the Jeff White home in Iowa City.
While there they attended a play at Hancher Auditorium.
-Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bulman are spending this week camping near
Wausau, Wis. in their pickup camper and will be visiting some
with their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sperduto.
-Mrs. Wilton Sinning of Corning, Iowa is spending this week with
her mother, Mrs. Esther Brandt, at the Donald Bulman home.
-Mrs. Helen Schneider and daughter Lori recently spent a few days
at Forest City, where the latter attended orientation, as she
will attend Waldorf College there next school year.
-Mr. and Mrs. Mike Petty and daughter of Waterloo spent the long
holiday weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Johnson.
-Relatives of Ronald Hangartner have been visiting him at Mercy
Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where he has been in serious condition
following a couple of strokes suffered two weeks ago. Last
reports were that there has been a little improvement.
-Maribeth Felton hosted a miscellaneous pre-nuptial shower for
Annette Kelly at her home on Saturday morning. Guests were former
high school classmates. The hostess served brunch on the patio. A
social hour was enjoyed and the honoree received many nice gifts
for her new home.
