Garrett Meverden Passes Away.
Cresco’s pioneer furniture dealer, G. Meverden, died early Friday morning after a brief illness, having been looking after his business almost up to the day of his death.
Garrett Meverden, the son of Richard and Harriett Meverden, was born in Holland, July 28, 1834.
He came to America in 1852 locating at Annapee, or Wolf’s River, Wisconsin.
In the fall of 1865 he went to Conover, then the terminal of the railroad, and in the spring of 1866 he came to Cresco on the first train to enter the new town. He worked for awhile as a carpenter. He helped to build the first depot here in Cresco.
In 1867 he bought out the furniture store started here in Cresco by George Purley and continued in that business till the day of his death. Mr. Meverden and Mr. P. F. O’Malley had the distinction of being Cresco merchants for fifty years.
He commenced business on Market street in what has since been known as the Jackson building. From there he moved into the Moon building on the east side of Elm street. His business prospered under his careful management; more room was needed so he built on the side of his present building. In the big fire the store building with the large stock he carried was totally destroyed. Mr. Meverden then took immediate steps to erect the present brick building.
On July 28, 1856, he was married to Bertha Grenwold. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Hattie, who died Feb. 11, 1903, and a son, Daniel, now a resident of Minneapolis.
Mr. Meverden, Cresco’s oldest merchant at the time of his death, was a good citizen, very devoted to his business which at all times to the very day of his death he gave his personal attention.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the rooms over the furniture store, conducted by Rev. W. A. Bockoven and the Old Fellows lodge. Burial was in Oaklawn.
